One of the most amazing Bathursts in history finished with Greg Murphy and Rick Kelly worthy and thrilled winners. Murphy's speed in qualifying was nothing short of stunning, and his shootout run will spark memories for years.

1. The final qualifying session at Bathurst was one of the best ever, Mark Skaife became the first driver to do a '7', he was soon joined by John Bowe and then bettered by Greg Murphy. Wow!

2. Jason Bright's championship quest was over when Paul Weel slammed into the stranded Nathan Pretty who had spun on sand left in the Esses by Robert Jones. Car #50 was running fifth at the time, ahead of Murphy.

3. The opening stint was a short 12 laps, but it was enough for Skaife to reel in Murphy and lead the Great Race. Simon Wills' trip to the sand saw the first roll of the strategy dice - Skaife and Russell Ingall pitting for a quickie.

4. Garth Tander was in a mood to race, and after getting shoved out of second in the first turn he set about getting it back. His car was the best he had ever driven at Bathurst, but not so good it could sneak down the inside of Brad Jones without contact. OzEmail black went for a spin at the Elbow and dropped to 24th, Tander grabbed fourth.

5. The Safety Car got a fair workout early. The stunning new Audi RS6 tootling around at a humble 80km/h five times in the first half of the race as both experienced and inexperienced crashed. The biggest crash (on lap 15) actually blocked the track and threatened a stoppage, but it also saved Skaife, who was in the pits to repair crash damage.

6. Murphy's 2m7.9s lap was Bathurst's fastest ever lap for less than 24 hours. The Kiwi using the shootout to shear a further 1.1 seconds off the mark. It was such a good time it left him shaking and speechless.

7. An 80-lap spell without a Safety Car intervention was fascinating, the different strategies being used leaving all guessing. As far as we could tell cars 51, 1, 21, 6, 31, 4 and 11 were all in with a shot 20 laps out from home.

8. Ambrose's hopes of Bathurst glory were gone when the first of two cut tyres sent him into the pits for an unscheduled stop on lap 119. The second just confirmed the dream was over and sixth was a good recovery.

9. Lap 135 and Bowe had a look up the inside of Skaife aiming for second. The move didn't stick, and light body contact left Skaife's door flapping. A black flag was obvious, and with a 40-second lead it would have made the podium battle a sensation. It finally came on lap 152 after a Safety Car - Skaife was screwed, Murphy style.

10. This entire Bathurst weekend was a dream for Murphy and co-driver Rick Kelly. They had the speed to dominate the entire weekend and were such deserving and emotional winners no-one could begrudge them the accolades that had already started to flow. Rick has become the race's youngest ever winner, and Murphy a three-time Bathurst champion.

The best ever Bathurst bash!

Was this Bathurst something special or what? Qualifying was one of the greatest sessions V8X has ever witnessed. Greg Murphy's shootout lap was one of the two most amazing things we have ever seen at Mt Panorama, and the race was just a cracker from the first corner to the last. And thankfully the race was played out at one point without a Safety Car for 70 laps.

The first 80 though saw so many Safety Cars you could have been excused for thinking the Audi was actually in the race. Through it all, we saw the leading teams in the country playing games with each other and hunting for a trump card. HRT and SBR opted to split its cars when a lap 12 Safety Car gave them opportunity. Murphy said his team was tempted to stop too, but with the second car already out they could just stuck to what they had planned.

Mark Skaife was at first lucky and then unlucky. After touching Jason Bargwanna early and stopping to repair the crash damage, he was lucky a Safety Car saved him from dropping a lap. The unlucky act was left in the hands of the race stewards, but you can read about that elsewhere.

Marcos Ambrose must have thought it was all going along nicely until he started cutting tyres - two in fact, and SBR had no idea why.

Once the strategies had played out, a Safety Car around 10 laps from home compressed the lead group and gave us a great sprint to the flag. Murphy had the speed to dominate that sprint and win; Lowndes could do nothing about him and in fact was more concerned with Steve Ellery, who was on his tail. Ellery had the Richards father and son combination to deal with, and fortunately for him they played hard with each other and left him with his second podium on the trot.

It was hard to tell who was more emotional on the podium, Murphy or Glenn Seton - after 20 attempts Seton finally got to stand on the podium, and he liked it.

It took around 18 laps for race stewards to show the black-flag to the Skaife/Kelly car, in that time a near 40 second gap to third place was swallowed by a Safety Car. The stop pushed Skaife down to ninth and out of contention with a handful of laps left. "Unbelievable," Skaife said moments after the race, still shaking his head. "It is just a joke, it cost us a chance at winning Australia's biggest motor race... three in a row."

It isn't often in this game you see something that will live with you forever, and the performance of Greg Murphy at Bathurst is one such thing. His stunning lap in the shootout on Saturday left us all breathless, and Murph speechless - and that is no mean feat in itself. And then the way he backed it all up in the race was definite red hero stuff.

Okay, so he was our blue boy from Sandown, but how could we skip him this race. Steve Ellery is proving to all that being a small one-car team isn't going to hold him back. Two podiums in a row is worthy of a shout from the rooftops, and the tall ex-Victorian can feel he and his team have done the job well. Put a smiley face on the truck.
