Ford driver Marcos Ambrose has sealed his first V8 Supercar Championship in front of a record crowd at The VIP Petfoods Main Event. Ambrose won both races for the weekend while his only rivals for the crown - Mark Skaife and Greg Murphy - self destructed in controversial circumstances.

Skaife finished the weekend wildly gesticulating at Russell Ingall after an incident sent the HRT Commodore into a wall and out of the action. Murphy failed to turn a lap today after his back seized after pulling a muscle during an earlier demonstration run.

Second home for the weekend was Jason Bright in his Betta Electrical Commodore, with Max Wilson claiming his first ever podium among the euphoria of Ford's first Championship win in seven years.

"It hasn't sunk in yet," Ambrose said, "I've been thinking long and hard about what to say if I won it this weekend, but I just don't know what to say.

"I just want to get the number one on the door now, it is a dream, I just can't believe it. I was really pumped this weekend to recover from the big points lead we lost and win it in style.

"Once lap 32 went and we knew we had the Championship, I was able to race free and enjoy it. The pressure was pretty intense this weekend, and I was pleased I wasn't the one who cracked - I think we proved this weekend it is not the pressure that caused the slump.

"The first Championship is the hardest, and it has been a long time coming. It has taken three years to get it off Skaife's door, I wouldn't mind it on mine for three."

Ambrose's win today was achieved in amazing circumstances, a huge storm near the end of the race blacking out the circuit and causing the race to be red flagged under Safety Car. With victory in both races, Ambrose was a clear winner of the Championship with six rounds wins out of 13 contested.

Jason Bright was very happy with his second spot after an unlucky few rounds wiped him out of Championship contention.

"It is great to finish the season on a high note and I'd like to think we can really mix it up with them next year," Bright said, indicating an intent to stay with his team.

"We didn't have the best car today, but we took a gamble with the set-up and had a bit-ser for the race. We were still half a second off Marcos, but we had some pace on the rest of them."

Bright said the conditions at the end of the race were 'ridiculous' and the red flag to shut the race down a few laps from completion was the right thing to do.

For Max Wilson third place was just the fillip needed as he heads home to Brazil for a couple of months holiday before getting ready for next season.

"It is a great feeling," Wilson said, "especially at the last round of the season, which is the one people remember the longest. I couldn't match the speed of Jason and Marcos, but my car was really good."

Wilson had a plum seat for the incident between Skaife and Ingall, and said it was inevitable it would end in tears, although he refused to get drawn into who was to blame. "Those two, when they get that close together something is going to happen."

Skaife and Ingall were dicing for third on the track when they connected with each other exiting the hairpin. Ingall was pushed wide onto the first and hit the rear of Skaife's car, pushing the #1 HRT Commodore into the fence and retirement.

Ingall pitted straight away, but Skaife remained by his car so he could make his feelings known, eventually waving his arms at Ingall who swerved towards. The incident is presently before the event stewards.

"It is deplorable to get turned around like that in a straight line. l I understand he was a little sideways but fair go, it takes a fair hit to turn a car like that."

Ingall was equally as vocal in his defence, saying Skaife hit him a couple of times and pushed him onto the kerb and into the dirt which flicked his car slightly sideways. "There is no way I was going to lift off.

"When I came around the corner and saw him standing by the track I thought he was going to throw something at me, so I backed off and drove towards him so he couldn't get a lob."
