V8 Supercars releases 2013 season calendar
V8 Supercars has released the 2013 season calendar with 17 events locked in for the landmark season.
The introduction of the Car of the Future and race debut of new manufacturers such as Nissan and Mercedes-Benz takes place at the season-opening Clipsal 500 Adelaide in late February/early March.
The official pre-season test day will be held at Sydney Motorsport Park at Eastern Creek on Saturday February 16, although the circuit has missed out on a championship event after making a one-off return in 2012.
There will be three international events with the return of Pukekohe in New Zealand in April, the debut of the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, in May, and the continuation of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix event in November.
The Phillip Island event moves from May to November to become the 'Phillip Island 400' and penultimate event of 2013 with Winton moving to late August. Meanwhile, Phillip Island and Queensland Raceway will be two-day race meetings.
Bathurst will be held in mid-October with the Gold Coast 600 pushed back to avoid clashes with other categories such as IndyCars and the FIA World Endurance Championship, in order to free up international drivers. As such, there is just one week between the Gold Coast and Abu Dhabi events.
"It's a very exciting calendar with a fantastic two month climax to the season," says V8 Supercars CEO David Malone.
"As a sport we are ultimately aiming for consistency of events year on year and largely we have achieved this in what is a very complex process.
"We are very happy with the way 2013 shapes up for the fans, the teams, sponsors, Government partners, our broadcast partners and the sport."
